How does Smart Charging work?

Using our smart charging is very simple. Once you've signed up as a customer, download the Chippio app, available on both the App Store and Google Play Store.

The app will guide you through the Smart Charging activation process and help you connect your car, set a minimum and maximum charge level, define smart charging locations, and specify when you need charging to be complete.

Once you've completed the setup and activated Smart Charging, all you need to do is plug in your car when you get home.

The system will charge the battery for 5 minutes to assess its status and establish a smart charging plan.

In the first phase, Smart Charging will charge your car up to the minimum level, regardless of the electricity price — to make sure your vehicle is always available when you need it.

In the second phase, the car will charge the remaining percentage up to the maximum limit you've set, prioritising the cheapest hours, while always keeping in mind the time by which you need it fully charged.

Here's an example:

Imagine you want your car charged by 7:00am, with a minimum limit of 20% and a maximum of 80%. Your electric car's current battery level is 15%.

  1. When you plug in your car at your smart charging location, Smart Charging will charge your vehicle for 5 minutes and establish the optimal charging plan.
  2. It will then charge your car to 20% as quickly as possible, regardless of electricity prices — so you can use it if something unexpected comes up.
  3. From there, knowing your car needs to be at 80% by 7:00am, it will prioritise the cheapest hours to concentrate charging during those windows.

This way, every charge is as efficient as possible.

It's also worth remembering that the Chippio app lets you monitor the charging status and receive notifications when charging is complete or when conditions change.
